Origin and breeding process of Cockapoo dogs
Learn about the origin of the Cockapoo dog.
Cockapoo or Cockerpoo, one of the first "designer dog" breeds between Poodle and Cocker Spaniel, appeared in the 1950s - 1960s in the US, earlier than Labradoodle (1980s) or Goldendoodle (1990s).
The purpose of breeding the Cockapoo was to create a breed with the following characteristics:
- The Cocker Spaniel's cheerful, gentle, and emotional temperament
- Smart, agile, curly, low-shedding coat of Poodle
The Cockapoo breeding process goes as follows:
- Cockapoo F1: Purebred Poodle (usually Miniature Poodle) x Purebred Cocker Spaniel (American or British)
- Cockapoo F1B: Cockapoo F1 x purebred Poodle, has more curly coat, sheds less than F1 generation
- Cockapoo F2: Cockapoo F1 x Cockapoo F1
- Cockapoo F2B: Cockapoo F1 and Cockapoo F1B or Poodle
Later generations have stable appearances and personalities, but if not carefully selected, it can cause unwanted diversity.
Currently, Cockapoo is not recognized as a purebred dog by major dog breed associations such as AKC, FCI, only some small dog associations such as Cockapoo Club of America or American Cockapoo Club (ACC) were established with the purpose of establishing their own breed standards.

What is the Cockapoo personality like?

Because it is a cross between a Poodle and a Cocker Spaniel, the Cockapoo possesses most of the most outstanding and excellent personalities of these two dog breeds, helping them become one of the most popular companions and pets today.
Friendly - sociable
Cockapoos are a super friendly and affectionate breed that enjoy interacting with people, including adults, children, and other pets. And they are almost never aggressive, even when disturbed.
When happy, they always wag their cute little tails, so they are also jokingly called "the always happy wag tail friend" - very suitable for families with children, the elderly or people living alone.
Intelligent, easy to train
Inheriting the superior intelligence of the Poodle, the Cockapoo has the ability to learn very quickly, and can easily understand basic commands after just a few training sessions.
They love brain-stimulating games like finding hidden food, puzzle toys or problem solving...
Love and affection
Cockapoos are very attached to their owners, they like to lie next to or follow everyone in the family. They like to be petted, hugged, cuddled or communicated with by eye contact. Therefore, if left alone for too long, they will suffer from “separation anxiety”.
Very active
Despite their small size, Cockapoos are super active, agile dogs who love to run and play outside. They love to play, chase balls, go for walks or swim.
Every day you should let this dog exercise at least 30 - 60 minutes a day to both maintain health and help them not feel bored leading to negative behaviors.
Sensitive & emotional control
Cockapoos have the ability to sense their owner's emotions, often coming close to comfort you when you are sad or lying quietly next to you when you are angry and stressed. In particular, this breed of dog does not bark for no reason, but on the contrary, they often maintain a stable mood and are not easily agitated.
Because of the above, Cockapoos are often chosen as therapy dogs, providing psychological support at treatment centers.
Why are Cockapoo dogs not popular in Vietnam?
Currently, Cockapoo dogs are not widely popular in Vietnam, do you know why? Let's find out below!
- Limited supply: Cockapoo is a hybrid breed that has not been mass-bred before, so most of the Cockapoo puppies in our country are imported directly from Thailand, America, Australia or Europe, and in parallel with importing, it requires high costs and complicated procedures, so the quantity is very small.
- High price: The price of a Cockapoo bred in Vietnam ranges from 10 to 20 million but is very rare, while an imported Cockapoo will cost from about 30 to over 50 million VND. Therefore, this breed is only suitable for high-end dog players.
- Not popular in Vietnam: Cockapoo is still a fairly new breed to dog lovers in our country, not as familiar as Poodle, Corgi,...
Therefore, if you really want to raise a Cockapoo, go to reputable breeders or high-end pet stores to own the most satisfactory, healthy and beautiful dog.
