Cockapoo or Cockerpoo, one of the first "designer dog" breeds between Poodle and Cocker Spaniel, appeared in the 1950s - 1960s in the US, earlier than Labradoodle (1980s) or Goldendoodle (1990s).

The purpose of breeding the Cockapoo was to create a breed with the following characteristics:

• The Cocker Spaniel's cheerful, gentle, and emotional temperament
• Smart, agile, curly, low-shedding coat of Poodle

The Cockapoo breeding process goes as follows:

• Cockapoo F1: Purebred Poodle (usually Miniature Poodle) x Purebred Cocker Spaniel (American or British)
• Cockapoo F1B: Cockapoo F1 x purebred Poodle, has more curly coat, sheds less than F1 generation
• Cockapoo F2: Cockapoo F1 x Cockapoo F1
